When it comes to effectively controlling sugar intake and losing weight, many people reduce their intake of sugary and fatty foods. However, fewer people realize that carbohydrates, like sugar, can also raise blood sugar levels. In fact, when choosing foods, patients can opt for those with a lower glycemic index, including unrefined foods like brown rice. The glycemic index of fruit also varies greatly; for example, honeydew melon has a higher glycemic index and should be avoided by obese individuals and those with diabetes.<\/p>\n
Quinoa, a recently emerging food, contains carbohydrates but has a low glycemic index. Most notably, it contains abundant amounts of essential amino acids, which the human body cannot produce on its own. These amino acids are crucial for tissue growth and repair. For a healthier diet, consider replacing white rice with one-quarter quinoa and three-quarters brown rice.<\/p>\n
Of course, changing eating habits takes time. Patients can take the first step by reducing their daily food intake by 15 to 20 percent. When dining out, they can choose more vegetables and less meat, or foods without any juice. Alternatively, they can choose a plate of rice and an additional plate of vegetables to share with colleagues.<\/p>\n
While dietary changes are important, combining them with medication can be even more effective. Currently, there are seven most commonly used medications for diabetes. Some, such as SGLT2 inhibitors, can both lower blood sugar and control weight. These drugs, known as SGLT2 inhibitors, eliminate excess sugar in the urine through the kidneys. They are highly effective without causing hypoglycemia, and can reduce long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.<\/p>\n
