Inspections during this period allow for early detection and appropriate treatment.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>What is a colonoscopy?<\/h3>\n<p>Colonoscopy is an examination of the lower gastrointestinal mucosa with a soft, long tubular endoscope, covering the terminal ileum, cecum, various parts of the colon, rectum and anus. In addition to finding out the cause of the disease, colonoscopy can also perform forceps sample testing, polypectomy or other treatments through various auxiliary instruments.<\/p>\n<h3>When do I need to see a doctor and have a colonoscopy?<\/h3>\n<p>If there are changes in bowel habits, including changes in the frequency, regularity, shape, and color of stools, please consult with your doctor as soon as possible for further examination.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bloody, occult blood, or mucus in stool<\/li>\n<li>dirty or difficult bowel movements<\/li>\n<li>prolonged diarrhea or constipation<\/li>\n<li>persistent abdominal discomfort<\/li>\n<li>lump in abdomen<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms of anemia, such as dizziness, pallor, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc.<\/li>\n<li>weight loss for no apparent reason<\/li>\n<li>Other symptoms of suspected colorectal disease, cancer<\/li>\n<li>Follow up on past intestinal diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How much do you know about colorectal cancer<\/h3>\n<p>With changes in lifestyle and eating habits, colorectal cancer ranks third among the most common cancers in the world. Since 2013, it has become the first most common cancer among Hong Kong\u2019s male and female population, and its death toll is second only to lung cancer. The ratio of male to female patients is 1.3:1. Low-fiber and high-fat eating habits, excessive intake of red meat, cured meat, smoked or high-temperature charcoal-fired food, alcohol, central obesity or overweight, etc., are all related to colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of colorectal cancer may be similar to other benign diseases, but most of them are persistent and worsening, such as stool bleeding, changes in bowel habits (such as frequency, regularity), changes in stool shape, unclean defecation, abdominal pain, anemia, and unexplained weight loss, etc. Even with hemorrhoids, the possibility of colorectal cancer at the same time cannot be ruled out.<\/p>\n<p>Normal cells in the large intestine undergo multiple genetic mutations to develop into polyps and then into cancer cells. This mutation process can take up to 10 years or more.<b>If colonoscopy is performed during this period, it can be detected early and received appropriate treatment.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Colonoscopy procedure<\/h3>\n<p>The examination is usually performed in an endoscopy examination room (can be in outpatient clinic or hospital), and the patient will first receive an appropriate amount of sedative injection to enter a deep sleep state and reduce physical discomfort or anxiety. The patient needs to lie on his side and bend his legs. After applying lubricant to the patient&#039;s anus, the doctor puts a colonoscope into the patient&#039;s anus for examination and treatment. Generally, the whole process takes about 15-45 minutes, depending on whether the condition requires other special treatment.<\/p>\n<h3>What Diseases Can a Colonoscopy Find?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>colorectal cancer<\/li>\n<li>Large intestine polyp<\/li>\n<li>Diverticulosis (bulging sacs in the wall of the large intestine)<\/li>\n<li>inflammatory bowel disease<\/li>\n<li>anal fissure<\/li>\n<li>hemorrhoid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Who should undergo colonoscopy?
