Bartholin's glands are longer than the left and right sides of the female vaginal entrance and behind the labia. They are about one centimeter in size and are difficult to detect under normal circumstances. Their function is to secrete lubricating fluid to facilitate sexual intercourse. If the Bartholin gland is blocked, the lubricating fluid cannot be secreted and accumulates to form a cyst, also known as a Bartholin gland cyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cysts usually appear on one side, and in severe cases, they can swell as large as an egg. If bacterial infection occurs (such as Escherichia coli or chlamydia or gonorrhea infected through sexual contact), it will induce Bartholin gland abscess, which will bring redness, swelling, pain and burning sensation to the patient, affecting daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This disease is more common in women between the ages of 20 and 30, who are of childbearing age. Some studies believe that the formation of Bartholin gland cyst is related to the obstruction of the outer opening of the gland duct caused by bacterial infection. If it is a small Bartholin gland cyst, the patient may not be aware of it, and it is mostly discovered accidentally during routine gynecological examinations. If a woman finds an unknown mass in the vulva, she should seek medical advice as soon as possible to determine the nature of the "lump" and rule out other serious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In terms of treatment, asymptomatic patients can choose conservative treatment and observe the size of the cyst regularly; if the cyst becomes larger or accompanied by the above-mentioned discomfort, surgical treatment should be considered. For patients with acutely infected Bartholin's gland cysts, if they do not improve after taking antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers prescribed by the doctor, they need to undergo pocket suture of Bartholin's gland cyst to remove the fluid and pus in the cyst surgically , and then suture the cyst wall. Patients should avoid bathing and sexual activities in the early stage of surgery to reduce the risk of infection; they can return to normal life after about one and a half months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the cause of this disease has not been fully determined, some cases are related to sexually transmitted diseases, so safety measures should be taken during sexual behavior, and condoms should be used to reduce the risk of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
