Before and after the peak travel season, there are a lot of people who come to see a doctor. Most of them come because of gastrointestinal discomfort, respiratory tract infection, or follow-up of urban diseases such as high blood fat and high blood pressure. In addition, cases of dizziness and headaches are also common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The causes of dizziness are complex and may be related to drugs, emotions, and environmental factors, and may also involve the health of the ears, brain, and heart. Although most cases are caused by minor problems, it also makes many people ignore the hidden major health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Ms. Wang, who has recently retired, suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes. She had not come for a follow-up consultation for a long time due to a long journey. Dizziness can be divided into four categories<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we often call "dizziness" is actually a more general term. During diagnosis, doctors usually try to ask the patient to describe the symptoms, duration and severity, as well as whether other symptoms occur at the same time, etc., and then combine the patient's past medical records and clinical examinations to help evaluate the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dizziness can be broken down into four categories, and people may experience symptoms from more than one category at the same time. One is "Vertigo", which is experienced by many people, that is, the feeling that oneself or the surrounding environment is strongly rotating, which is what we often describe as an illusion of spinning around; the second type is "Disequilibrium", which represents balance or Coordination is affected, and the patient may mistakenly believe that his legs are weak and he is unsteady; the third category, "Pre-syncope," refers to the patient feeling that he is about to lose consciousness; and the fourth category, "Lightheadedness," Patients generally describe their head as floating, feeling unreal, and having difficulty concentrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commonly caused by otolithiasis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us first focus on the more common dizziness conditions mentioned above, of which about 80% are caused by peripheral vertigo. Since the vestibular system located in the inner ear is responsible for the body's sense of balance and space, when the balance function is imbalanced, this type of dizziness will occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the often-heard "imbalance of ear fluid" that can cause peripheral dizziness, the correct name is "Meniere's Disease", which is caused by excessive accumulation of lymph fluid (i.e. ear fluid) in the inner ear. The exact cause is Unknown. The onset of dizziness can last from tens of minutes to several hours, accompanied by ear plugs, tinnitus, and even poor hearing. This disease is easy to relapse and is difficult to cure. However, anti-faint drugs and diuretics prescribed by doctors can help promote ear water circulation and reduce the chance of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, the medical community tends to believe that otolithiasis (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, BPPV in English) is the more common cause of peripheral vertigo. It means that the otoliths shift and fall off, affecting the flow of inner ear fluid and affecting sensory signals. Something went wrong. Because the displaced otoliths are slowly absorbed by the body, the disease usually recovers on its own within a few weeks to a few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another cause is caused by the invasion of the inner ear by filtering viruses (such as influenza viruses), which is medically called acute vestibular neuritis (Vestibular Neuritis). Dizziness may appear within a few weeks of recovery from the infection, and the pain may be severe, but usually subsides slowly, mainly with medication to relieve the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of diagnosis, doctors may combine pure tone audiometry, electrocochleography (ECoG), inner ear temperature difference test (Caloric Test), etc. to help diagnose the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be careful about brain diseases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why can\u2019t you ignore dizziness symptoms? In addition to peripheral vertigo, about 20% of vertigo cases are caused by central vertigo, such as stroke and cranial nerve tumors. Since the brain nervous system controls the human body's cognitive ability, muscle coordination, mobility, etc., patients may be accompanied by symptoms such as headaches, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision or double vision, facial distortion, slurred speech, and a sense of imbalance in the limbs. If appropriate treatment is not provided early, permanent functional damage may occur. In severe cases, fainting may occur, and even life may be in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to possible concerns about brain health, doctors may also check patients for irregular heartbeats. Arrhythmia generally refers to abnormal heartbeats or heart rhythm problems, including heartbeats that are too fast, too slow, or beating irregularly. High-risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and thyroid disease. Patients may experience symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and fainting. However, some cases are not treated because the symptoms are not obvious. By the time they are discovered, they have been complicated by severe complications such as stroke and heart failure, increasing the risk of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With fatigue, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking about Ms. Wang's case, she mentioned that she had been dizzy for more than three weeks and occasionally felt short of breath and tired. She said: "I fainted once or twice on the street. Fortunately, some kind-hearted people helped me. If it didn't fall, I don't know what to do!" I immediately arranged for her to draw blood, and the clinical examination also found that her blood pressure My blood sugar and blood sugar have increased a lot compared to before, and my index is not "pretty". After a series of heart and brain tests, it was discovered that she suffered from arrhythmia and cerebrovascular stenosis. Fortunately, it was discovered in time and it did not lead to a stroke. In addition to adjusting the dosage of her medication, I also repeatedly told her to quit smoking appropriately, exercise frequently, and most importantly, to have regular follow-up visits to monitor physical changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, there are many other causes of dizziness, so patients should not diagnose the disease on their own. The best thing to do is to record the discomfort in detail and seek medical treatment as early as possible. This will help to identify the culprit of dizziness early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
