Moderate sun exposure is good for your eyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moderate sunlight exposure not only stimulates vitamin D synthesis in the skin but also indirectly benefits eye health. Studies have suggested that vitamin D deficiency may be linked to certain eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome. Furthermore, recent studies have found that frequent outdoor activities and exposure to sunlight can slow the progression of myopia in children. This is because specific wavelengths of sunlight stimulate the release of dopamine in the retina, slowing axial length growth and controlling myopia. Furthermore, outdoor activities often involve looking far into the distance, which helps relax eye muscles and relieve eye fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survey finds Hong Kong people need to pay attention to their eye health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However, the harmful effects of ultraviolet light on the eyes cannot be ignored. Ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB) in sunlight are a major threat to eye health, potentially damaging the cornea, lens, and retina. According to a survey conducted by Orbis and the Hong Kong Society of Ophthalmology on ultraviolet light and the risks of eye aging (over half of the respondents were middle-aged people aged 50 or above), nearly 60% of respondents are at risk of eye aging. More concerningly, over 80% of respondents reported experiencing symptoms of eye aging, such as photophobia and decreased night vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 common serious eye diseases caused by sun exposure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The survey also revealed that 20% of respondents never use sunscreen to protect their eyes when exposed to strong sunlight. This could lead to serious eye problems in the long run:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cataracts: Long-term cumulative ultraviolet damage causes the protein in the lens of the eye to age, turning it from transparent to turbid, forming cataracts, which in turn hinder the retina from sensing light, leading to a gradual decline in vision. In severe cases, complications such as glaucoma, iritis, and even complete blindness may occur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Macular degeneration: The macula, located at the very center of the retina, is home to the highest concentration of photoreceptor cells and is responsible for central vision, fine detail, and color perception. Aging is a significant factor in macular degeneration, making macular degeneration a common eye condition among the elderly. Long-term exposure to strong sunlight is also a risk factor. Ultraviolet rays cause oxidative damage to the retina, accelerating the aging of retinal photoreceptors and increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Photokeratitis: This condition, also known as "snow blindness," is caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays reflected from the snow, leading to corneal burns. People who spend extended periods at beaches or frequently engage in water sports are also at higher risk. Sufferers experience sudden, severe eye pain, photophobia, tearing, and blurred vision. If left untreated or the condition becomes severe, it can lead to macular degeneration and even permanent blindness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Pterygium: Long-term exposure to sunlight and wind can lead to the proliferation of conjunctival vascular tissue, forming a pterygium (also known as cataract). When a pterygium gradually spreads to the center of the cornea, it can obscure the pupil's vision and even change the curvature of the cornea, causing eye discomfort and blurred vision.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Block the sun's ultraviolet rays from damaging your eyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Eye diseases are often difficult to reverse and cure once they develop, so early eye protection is crucial! If you need to spend extended periods outdoors, remember to use the "three treasures of eye protection" (a sun hat, sunglasses, and a parasol) to protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Wear sunglasses with a UV400 rating, indicating they effectively block harmful UV rays. Remember that ultraviolet rays are high in energy and can penetrate clouds even on cloudy days, so eye protection is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Many Hong Kong residents enjoy traveling, heading to popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, to enjoy the sunshine and beaches in the summer, and to ski resorts like Hokkaido in the winter. While it's important to enjoy yourself while traveling, it's also important to be mindful of eye protection. This is especially true when spending extended periods at beaches or ski resorts, where the eyes can suffer invisible damage from the strong light reflected from the sea and snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In addition, consuming more lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids in your daily diet can help maintain eye health. There are now more and more high-quality oils to choose from.
