He still had a bedwetting problem, and she worried his classmates would laugh at him, saying, &quot;You&#039;re such a big kid, and you&#039;re still wetting.&quot; Other parents, to reduce their children&#039;s nocturnal urination, resorted to forcibly waking them every night to use the bathroom, even yelling at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, these methods don&#039;t solve the problem. Instead, they place immense psychological pressure on children, disrupting parent-child relationships. Furthermore, sleep deprivation can lead to distraction for both adults and children, negatively impacting their physical and mental health in the long term. General practitioner Dr. So Yong-po explains how parents can effectively address their children&#039;s nocturnal enuresis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding Nocturnal Enuresis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nocturnal enuresis, also known as nighttime &quot;urination,&quot; is very common in early childhood. Children aged five and above experience involuntary urination during sleep (more than twice a week for more than three months) despite normal daytime urination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There are two main causes of nocturnal enuresis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nocturnal enuresis can be divided into two categories: primary (when a child has been unable to control nocturnal enuresis throughout their growth) and secondary (when a child starts to have nocturnal enuresis again after having been able to effectively control nocturnal urination for six consecutive months).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The causes of primary nocturnal enuresis are mostly unknown, and the associated factors are beyond the child&#039;s control or change, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physiological factors: such as insufficient bladder capacity, insufficient secretion of antidiuretic hormone, etc.;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetics: Children whose family (especially parents) have a history of enuresis are more likely to be affected;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developmental factors: urination function may be delayed;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The causes of secondary nocturnal enuresis may be related to the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Psychological and environmental factors: anxiety, stress or emotional problems;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to changes in sleeping environment or excessive fatigue;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caused by other diseases, such as constipation, urethritis, diabetes and impaired kidney function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nocturnal enuresis characteristics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nocturnal enuresis is typically characterized by an inability to control urination during sleep, despite normal daytime urination. If accompanied by daytime urinary frequency or urgency, concerns may arise regarding bladder function. The frequency of bedwetting varies from person to person, ranging from occasional to nightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can parents do? 4 behavioral therapies to improve nocturnal enuresis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most children will recover naturally, so parents don&#039;t need to worry. Depending on the condition, doctors may prescribe medication. However, it&#039;s important to note that medications may work quickly initially, but can easily lead to relapses after discontinuation, and may also cause side effects. Therefore, parents are generally advised to start with behavioral therapy, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve children&#039;s living habits, such as limiting water intake two hours before bedtime and emptying the bladder before bedtime;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parents can follow the doctor&#039;s advice to set a drinking and urination schedule for their children. Let them drink and urinate regularly according to the schedule, so that their bladders get used to urinating only when they are full to a certain degree;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider using a bedwetting sensor at night. The sensor will sound when it is wet, waking your child up to urinate. This will train your child to automatically get up to urinate whenever they sense a full bladder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a child&#039;s self-esteem and self-confidence are severely damaged due to nocturnal enuresis, their academic performance declines, or their interpersonal relationships deteriorate, it is recommended that parents arrange for their child to receive psychological treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents should understand that nocturnal enuresis is not caused by their children&#039;s laziness or deliberate behavior. They can first understand the reasons for their children&#039;s nocturnal enuresis and avoid scolding them.
