Although it wasn&#039;t yet at the level of an acute myocardial infarction, the doctor warned that if not treated promptly, it could worsen at any time. This left her in a dilemma: should she wait in line for treatment at a public hospital, or seek assistance from a private hospital?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coronary heart disease is known as a &quot;silent killer&quot;.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most common heart diseases. According to the Department of Health, approximately 4,000 people die from CAD each year, meaning that in 2023 alone, an average of about 11.3 people died from it every day. Most worryingly, at least 10% of patients experience no symptoms before the onset of the disease, and even routine basic physical examinations often fail to detect any abnormalities. Therefore, CAD is also known as the &quot;silent killer,&quot; with the mortality rate from acute attacks reaching as high as 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Be alert to five warning signs of coronary heart disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cases like Mr. Chan&#039;s are not uncommon in Hong Kong. If you or a family member experience the following symptoms, especially if they worsen during exercise or emotional excitement, you should seek medical attention from a cardiologist as soon as possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Angina (chest pain or discomfort, which may feel squeezing, tightness, or burning)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palpitation, arrhythmia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness, or even loss of consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heart examination to diagnose the condition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally, doctors will make an initial diagnosis through blood tests, exercise electrocardiograms, and echocardiograms. If a blockage in the blood vessel is suspected, a cardiac CT scan will be performed to assess whether a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), commonly known as &quot;angioplasty,&quot; is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&quot;Tongbozi&quot; alleviates the worsening crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;Angiopasteurization&quot; is a minimally invasive procedure in which doctors insert a catheter into the artery in the patient&#039;s wrist or inner thigh, extending it to the location where the coronary artery is narrowed or blocked. The balloon attached to the catheter is inflated to reopen the blood vessel, and then a coronary artery stent is inserted to restore the blood vessel&#039;s patency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long waiting times or missed treatment opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For relatively stable, non-urgent cases like Mr. Chen&#039;s, public hospitals often face long waiting times. Surveys indicate that stable new cases can take anywhere from 66 to 100 weeks to be scheduled for follow-up and treatment. However, during this waiting period, the condition can deteriorate at any time, potentially leading to myocardial infarction, heart failure, or even sudden death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid delaying treatment, Ms. Chen discussed it with her family and decided to refer her father to a private hospital. The surgery was scheduled within a month of the consultation, which greatly reduced the psychological stress and potential risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally, angioplasty can be completed in about two to three hours, but the exact time will vary depending on the patient&#039;s condition, the complexity of the vascular blockage, and other factors. If the coronary artery blockage is severe, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for one to two days after the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Postoperative care for angioplasty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After successfully undergoing angioplasty, Mr. Chen must strictly adhere to postoperative care guidelines to prevent a recurrence of coronary heart disease:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wound care: Keep the wound clean and dry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid strenuous exercise: During the first two weeks after surgery, try to avoid strenuous exercise, such as swimming or playing basketball; also avoid lifting heavy objects or exerting force to prevent affecting wound healing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take medication on time: Have regular check-ups and take medications as directed by your doctor, including aspirin, lipid-lowering and cholesterol-lowering drugs, antiplatelet drugs, etc., to prevent blood clots from forming in vascular stents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations for preventing recurrence of coronary heart disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of whether you have undergone heart surgery, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to preventing coronary heart disease. This includes quitting smoking and controlling blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. It&#039;s also important to have a balanced diet, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and low-cholesterol foods, and avoiding fatty and sweet foods. Get enough sleep and rest every day and avoid staying up late; moderate exercise is also essential, with at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least five days a week, such as brisk walking, jogging, or swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heart health should not be ignored. If you experience any discomfort such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or abnormally fast heartbeat, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible for examination and choose the most appropriate treatment.
