Patients experience a rapid decline in overall mobility, becoming unable to support basic bodily functions, leading to breathing difficulties. Previously, most patients did not survive past the age of two, but with medical breakthroughs, life expectancy has now been extended by at least 10 years or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides SMA, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig&#039;s disease, gained widespread attention due to the &quot;Ice Bucket Challenge,&quot; is another motor neuron disease. Patients&#039; thinking and senses are not affected, but they can clearly feel their bodily functions deteriorating rapidly until they can no longer move, a situation akin to being gradually frozen in a freezer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The causes of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) are mostly unknown, and early symptoms are difficult to recognize. For example, some patients suddenly find themselves unable to swallow normally and only discover they have the disease after seeking medical attention. Local surveys have shown that patients take an average of one year to be diagnosed. In addition, there are currently no tests that can directly assist in diagnosis. We can only rely on various examinations, such as electromyography (EMG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to rule out diseases of other organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some sources suggest that ALS is more deadly than SMA because there is still no treatment that can significantly reverse the disease, and most patients survive for an average of about 3 years. In the early stages, medication can slow the progression of the disease, and rehabilitation therapy can help alleviate symptoms and reduce complications. In later stages, close monitoring of the condition is required, along with long-term bed rest and the use of assistive devices such as ventilators and cough machines. This allows patients to manage their medical needs at home and reduces the heavy burden on caregivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Middle-aged and elderly people need to pay close attention to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), as this disease is often sporadic and commonly occurs in people aged 50 or older. They should be aware of three main symptoms: gradual loss of strength in the hands and feet, involuntary muscle twitching, and spasms in the hands and feet.
