Brian (pseudonym), who just turned 50, underwent a routine physical examination last year. The report showed that his low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was higher than 3.4 mmol\/L. The ideal LDL-C level for adults is generally below 2.6 mmol\/L; for high-risk individuals, the target level is even stricter. Although his level was above the standard, Brian thought it was only slightly elevated and, confident in his slim physique, decided to first improve his blood lipids through dietary control without undergoing medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In recent months, Brian had experienced shortness of breath while walking on flat ground, and occasionally felt chest tightness and dizziness. After much persuasion from his wife, he finally sought medical attention. Following a clinical evaluation, Brian underwent blood tests, an electrocardiogram, and cardiac imaging, including a coronary CT scan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The examination revealed that one of Brian's major coronary arteries was about 70% narrowed, accompanied by coronary artery calcification. This degree of narrowing is a warning sign clinically, indicating that blood supply to the heart has been significantly affected. If not treated promptly, it could develop into an acute myocardial infarction and even endanger his life. The doctor recommended that he undergo coronary interventional treatment, commonly known as "angioplasty," as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's important to note that coronary heart disease is a systemic atherosclerotic disease. Angioplasty can only address the local problem and does not change the underlying risk of atherosclerosis in other blood vessels. Therefore, postoperative management is crucial. For the first two weeks after surgery, patients should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects. More importantly, they should have regular follow-up appointments and take medications as prescribed, including antiplatelet drugs (such as aspirin) and cholesterol-lowering drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brian asked his doctor, "Now that the surgery is complete, can I stop taking cholesterol-lowering medication as long as I avoid certain foods?" The doctor advised against it, because cholesterol-lowering medications (such as statins) inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the body, lowering low-density cholesterol levels in the blood and helping to stabilize plaques in blood vessels. If you stop taking the medication on your own, your blood lipids may rise again, or it may cause another blockage or even another interventional procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people mistakenly believe that being thin means they won't get coronary heart disease. In fact, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, smoking habits, and family history are all important risk factors, and the disease often develops without obvious symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
