However, many citizens still brave the high temperatures and intense sunlight and enjoy outdoor activities in the summer. But ultraviolet (UV) radiation can have various health effects on the body. The public must take the potential harm caused by UV radiation seriously and take appropriate sun protection measures to protect their own and their families&#039; health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, it&#039;s important to note that some people need to avoid sunlight, such as patients with lupus. Why? Because ultraviolet radiation is a key trigger for this disease, so patients must strictly protect themselves from the sun. Lupus is an autoimmune disease caused by the body producing abnormal antibodies that mistakenly attack its own normal cells, leading to damage to multiple organ functions; the butterfly-shaped rash on the patient&#039;s face is a typical symptom, hence the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lupus erythematosus patients should not be exposed to sunlight.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the typical butterfly rash appearing on the cheeks and bridge of the nose, other sun-exposed areas may also develop round or oval scaly rashes. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is photosensitizing, making it particularly prone to acute flare-ups after exposure to ultraviolet radiation, accompanied by itching, pain, and even hair loss, oral or nasal mucosal ulcers. In addition to skin symptoms, joint pain and inflammation are also very common. More than half of patients develop kidney disease, potentially progressing to nephritis and kidney failure; in severe cases, it can even affect multiple systems, including the cardiovascular, nervous, and pulmonary systems. This disease predominantly affects women and can impact pregnancy and fetal health; therefore, patients should discuss the risks and undergo relevant assessments with their doctor before planning a pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of lupus treatment is to control and relieve symptoms, stabilize the condition, and reduce relapses and complications through medication. Patients must pay attention to sun protection in their daily lives: apply appropriate sunscreen before going out, wear long-sleeved clothing, hats, and sun umbrellas, and try to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during the midday sun. In addition, maintaining a relaxed mood and a healthy lifestyle are equally important for stabilizing the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skin cancer is also closely related to ultraviolet radiation. Many people mistakenly believe that skin cancer is only common in sun-exposed areas like Australia and New Zealand. However, according to Hong Kong cancer statistics, in 2023, &quot;non-melanoma skin cancer&quot; ranked tenth among the ten most common cancers in Hong Kong, with over a thousand new cases each year. Skin cancer is mainly divided into two categories: &quot;melanoma&quot; and &quot;non-melanoma.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melanoma accounts for about 10% of skin cancers, but it has a higher degree of malignancy and mortality rate. This disease is formed by the lesion of melanocytes in the epidermis. It grows rapidly, is prone to ulceration, and has a tendency to spread early, metastasizing to organs such as the lymph nodes, lungs, and brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-melanoma skin cancer accounts for about 90% of cases, with the most common type being basal cell carcinoma. It often occurs in the head and neck area, with nearly 30% of cases appearing on the nose. It grows relatively slowly; although it rarely spreads, it can still invade deep into the skin and destroy surrounding tissues. Another type is squamous cell carcinoma, which is more aggressive and destructive to tissues. It can cause erythema, lumps, or ulcers on the skin and has the potential to metastasize to the lymph nodes. In rare cases, it can even spread to the lungs and bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prolonged exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major cause of skin cancer. As we age, the accumulated UV damage in our bodies gradually increases, raising the risk of developing the disease. Besides prolonged sun exposure, other high-risk factors include: having a large number of moles, fair skin that is easily sunburned, a personal or family history of skin cancer, frequent exposure to UV light, a history of severe sunburn in early childhood, and a weakened immune system. All high-risk groups need to pay extra attention to changes in their skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Accelerating the aging of photoreceptor cells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is not limited to the skin. UVA and UVB rays can directly damage the cornea, lens, and retina, increasing the risk of various eye diseases and threatening eye health. UV radiation can cause protein abnormalities in the lens of the eye, making it cloudy and leading to cataracts that impair vision; in severe cases, it can even cause complications such as glaucoma, iritis, and blindness. In addition, the macula of the retina, which is responsible for central vision and fine image recognition, will experience accelerated aging of photoreceptor cells due to prolonged sun exposure, greatly increasing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultraviolet radiation can also cause acute corneal burns, commonly known as &quot;snow blindness&quot; or &quot;photokeratitis.&quot; Besides being common in snowy areas, it also poses a risk in highly reflective environments such as beaches and during water activities. Patients may experience severe eye pain, photophobia, tearing, and blurred vision, and may even suffer permanent vision damage. On the other hand, prolonged sun and wind exposure can lead to conjunctival tissue hyperplasia, forming pterygium, which can obstruct the pupil and vision, causing blurred vision and persistent discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If spending extended periods outdoors, utilize the &quot;three essentials for eye protection&quot;: a sun hat, sunglasses, and a parasol, to minimize UV damage to your eyes. It is recommended to choose sunglasses with a UV400 label for effective UV protection.
