Ivan, who had just returned to Hong Kong from a trip to Thailand, sought medical attention due to a sore throat. During the consultation, he mentioned that he occasionally experienced nosebleeds while traveling, which he attributed to his love of spicy food or the hot, dry weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Upon further questioning, it was discovered that he had been experiencing frequent nasal congestion and nosebleeds for the past six months; he had assumed it was just a nasal allergy and hadn't paid much attention to it. The doctor suspected this could be a sign of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Because the nasopharynx is located in a hidden area and is difficult to observe with the naked eye, a nasopharyngeal endoscopy was performed to examine the nasopharynx for any abnormalities; a tissue sample was then taken for a biopsy to determine the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biopsy results showed that Ivan's nasopharyngeal cells did indeed have abnormal changes, and he needed to undergo detailed examinations such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography to determine the stage of cancer and whether it had spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma ranks as the 10th most common cancer among men in Hong Kong, with many cases occurring in younger men in their prime. Early symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are difficult to detect, especially since initial symptoms are very similar to respiratory illnesses, including nasal congestion, runny nose, blood in nasal discharge or sputum; or unilateral ear pain, tinnitus leading to hearing loss, and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. As the disease progresses, patients may experience headaches, facial numbness, blurred vision or double vision, difficulty swallowing, and hoarseness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"I don't smoke, so how could I have nasopharyngeal carcinoma?" Ivan found the diagnosis hard to accept. The doctor explained that while smoking is a high-risk factor for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the exact cause remains unclear, but it could be related to viral infections or family history. Other statistics show a high incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Guangdong province, possibly related to a preference for pickled foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, it was early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma, with a relatively high cure rate. The treatment with intensity-modulated radiotherapy was remarkably effective. However, the treatment had certain side effects. In addition to sequelae such as dry mouth and hair loss, the most distressing thing for Ivan, who loves food, was that the radiotherapy damaged his taste buds, causing him to lose his sense of taste. He didn't know when he would recover, and the weakened oral mucosa made it difficult for him to eat spicy food, affecting his appetite and causing him to lose weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
